THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES
M E S S A G E
The Philippine Government and the Filipino people are one with the rest of the world in celebrating the Universal Health Coverage Day.
Healthcare is among the pillars of national development: It empowers our citizenry to maximize opportunities and lead full, productive, and dignified lives. It is for this reason that the Philippines welcomed the 2012 United Nations resolution calling all nations to ensure universal access to quality healthcare for every person, everywhere. It is a call that the Philippine government has heeded with our very own Kalusugan Pangkalahatan or Universal Health Care agenda.
The strides that we have made towards the objectives of this initiative have been significant. In 2010 only 47.07 million Filipinos were enrolled under PhilHealth, the Philippines’ national health insurance program. Today, this number has grown to 89.42 million Filipinos or 88 percent of our total population. We allocated billions to extend mandatory insurance coverage for the nation’s poorest families including our senior citizens, and have also rationalized benefit packages to ensure cost- and hassle-free experience in medical facilities.
With the help of the Filipino people, we except to expand our portfolio of service and close the gap of uncovered citizens in the coming years. It is my hope that, with the continued participation of partners like the (Alliance of) Young Nurse Leaders and Advocates International, we will realize our shared goals under the Universal Health Care Program and create a healthier and more inclusive future in our nation.
I wish everyone a joyful, meaningful observance.
BENIGNO S. AQUINO III
